Studying Psychology in the Bachelor of Science

Psychology will help you understand why people are the way they are, and why they do the things they do. You will also study abnormal behaviour, including how it occurs and how it can be treated.

Learn about aspects of behaviour such as human motivation and emotion, decision-making processes and social interaction, through a strong basic knowledge of psychological concepts and theories in areas including cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, sensation and perception, and social psychology.

Studies in this discipline are also available via the Bachelor of Arts.

    The Psychology major will provide you with a broad scientific general education and is part of the preparation for a career as either a research or professional psychologist.*

    Following additional postgraduate training, you can work in a wide variety of areas including clinical psychology, clinical neuropsychology, community psychology, counselling psychology, educational psychology, forensic psychology, health psychology, organisational/industrial psychology, sports psychology, or academic psychology.

    Employment for Psychologists is expected to grow very strongly to 2019 and earnings are above average.

    Bachelor of Science graduates with a a major in Psychology are very well-prepared for a range of postgraduate degrees available in psychology. You will also be well-placed to apply for:

    • Professionally focused graduate degrees in the sciences and technology, including biotechnology, environmental systems, informatics and nanotechnology;
    • Graduate degrees preparing for a wide range of professions including engineering, law, medicine and other health sciences, and teaching;
    • Masters and Honours pathways to research higher degrees in the sciences and technology within the Faculty of Science, Melbourne School of Engineering, Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences, and the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.

In the Bachelor of Science an accredited Psychology sequence comprises 125 points of Psychology subjects, including eight compulsory subjects and at least two level 3 electives. Students can take as many psychology subjects as they wish in order to satisfy these requirements.
