A portrait of Warren. The Reverend Dr Warren Keith Bartlett was a member of the Department of Psychology at the University of Melbourne for many years and served as its Head from 1978-1983. He is warmly remembered as an astute Head and an enthusiastic teacher of research methods and statistics during his tenure in the department, as well as the psychology of religion .

He also made a significant contribution to the University community as Associate Dean (1975-1980) and then Deputy Dean in the early 1980s in the Faculty of Arts, and as a member of the Queen’s and St Hilda’s College Councils (1970-1985). Bookending his time as an academic member of the School were substantial periods of service to the Methodist Church (up to 1977), followed by the Uniting Church (from 1977), including a term as Moderator of the Uniting Church from 1994-1997.

Warren completed his PhD on the application of stochastic models to group processes under the supervision of Professor Oscar Oeser, the founding professor and head of the School. He supervised a number of PhD students, including Professor Pip Pattison. She recalls her debt to Warren as an encouraging and supportive supervisor: “Warren not only guided successful completion of my Honours and PhD projects but also helped me to expand my knowledge and skills in a myriad of other ways and especially to have the courage to embrace challenge. I feel very fortunate to have known Warren and to have been his student.”
