Is There More To Mindfulness? Exploring the Influence of Nonattachment-To-Self on Athlete Wellbeing and Motivation

(Past project)

There has been growing interest in the use of mindfulness-based practices to enhance wellbeing and performance in athletes. Whilst competing in the ‘here and now’ is a much talked about topic in sport, it can be difficult to do so when an athlete’s self-related thoughts, desires and ambitions can pull them into the past or future. This project explores how nonattachment-to-self, the ability to engage with self-related experiences without egoic fixation, may influence the relationship between mindfulness, wellbeing and motivation in athletes. In doing so, we aim to illuminate a depth to athlete mindfulness that has not been previously charted.
