Join us for this MSPS Online Colloquium where Dr Joanne Chung of the University of Toronto will be presenting a talk, 'Emotions in Everyday Life and Personality Change'.

Abstract: Emotions are an important aspect of personality, but the link between people’s experiences of emotions in everyday life and personality change is understudied. Focusing on the emotional aspects of personality processes in diverse samples of people may help us better understand why and how people’s personalities change. In this talk, I will share initial steps that I have taken towards pursuing this goal.

First, I will discuss the results of my work examining the structure of people’s emotional experiences in daily life from a discrete emotions perspective. Then, I will describe the Karakter project, a 13-month mixed methods study focused on emotion experience and personality in a sample of Syrian origin young adults in the Netherlands. I will close by sharing plans for a longitudinal study that will examine how racialised Canadian emerging adults’ experiences with social structures co-occur with emotions and personality development over the course of university.

Bio: Joanne M. Chung is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Toronto, Mississauga. In her research, she examines how aspects of people’s culture, self-concept, and emotional life interact to shape individual differences during important life transitions. She is also interested in how personality processes can be assessed using mixed methods, and especially values exploratory, descriptive, and transparent research. She was co-director of the Karakter project, a longitudinal study focused on exploring how everyday emotional experiences are related to positive personality change in Syrian origin young adults who have recently resettled in the Netherlands. This work in particular has informed her current research direction, which is to use her training and expertise in psychology to conduct research in partnership with members of the community.
