"If you listen to yourself closely, you may notice how everyday language transcends the traditional boundaries between emotional and physical health. Have you ever heard yourself saying: ""I have a gut feeling about this"", ""my heart is in my mouth"", or ""I have butterflies in my tummy""? As part of the Bugs and Brains Study, my research focuses on health holistically, investigating the role of the gut microbiota (bacteria) and hormones in irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, and depression. When I am not teaching, reading, and writing about the gut-brain-axis, I enjoy travelling, learning languages, good coffee, and throwing away all hope of buying a house with my smashed avo at brunch."
