Seminar Description

Misinformation often continues to affect reasoning post-correction. I will review some recent evidence that relates to social-context factors influencing this effect, including source credibility, social norms, and worldview congruence. I will demonstrate that initial concerns that corrections tend to backfire were largely unwarranted, and will touch on the importance of replication work.

Ullrich received free undergraduate education in Germany, and was paid a half-decent salary to obtain a PhD, demonstrating in some EEG work that dual-process models of recognition memory are sine dubio far superior to single-process models. He then moved to the UWA School of Psychological Science, which sits on Whadjuk Noongar land, to join the lab of Stephan Lewandowsky, a weird Germaustralian with a funny North-American-inspired accent, who tortured him with MatLab. Together they conducted research on memory, memory updating and misinformation. While Lewandowsky was forced to leave the country to escape prosecution, Ullrich stuck around, using ARC funding to do research, teaching cognitive psychology and communication skills, and chairing the School’s community engagement committee.
