The Minister for Health has acknowledged the future challenges that lie ahead for an aging Australia. To address the challenge, the National Health and Medical Research Council (NH&MRC) has recently funded a series of studies that focus on music and its role in the health and wellbeing of people living with dementia. Our symposium hosted by the National Music Therapy Research Unit at The University of Melbourne will feature presentations from key national and international researchers in the field of music and dementia. Their presentations span neurology, neuropsychology, psychology, and traditional clinical music therapy to provide a comprehensive and contemporary overview of the state of research in the field. Our esteemed speakers are:

Prof. Helen Odell Miller (Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge)
Prof. Michael Nilsson (Hunter Medical Research Institute & Newcastle University)
Prof. Thomas Wosch (FWSW University, Germany),
Dr Amee Baird (Macquarie University),
Dr Libby Gleadhill (University of Queensland),
Dr Sandra Garrido (Western Sydney University),
Dr Ania Bukowska (University of Physical Education in Krakow, Poland)
Dr Jeanette Tamplin, (The University of Melbourne)
Dr Imogen Clark (The University of Melbourne)

Following the close of the proceedings, there will be an official launch of the recently funded National Health and Medical Research Council Project “Music Interventions for dementia and depression in the elderly (MIDDEL)” followed by refreshments.
