The panel members for this discussion are:

Simon De Deyne is a cognitive scientist at the University of Melbourne. You can find him at the Computational Cognitive Science Lab and the Complex Human Data Hub at the School of Psychological Sciences. He is interested in how the mind acquires and represents word meaning through our experiences with the world and the use of language. Current work addresses questions about how connotative meaning varies across different languages and cultures, and how bilinguals learn and represent word meaning.

Charles Kemp's research focuses on computational models of learning, reasoning and communication. Much of his recent work aims to analyze linguistic and cultural variation, and an earlier line of work focused on categorization, generalization, causal reasoning, and relational learning. His approach draws on tools from information theory, natural language processing, AI and statistics and he is especially interested in the analysis of large, naturally occurring data sets (e.g. dictionaries and linguistic corpora).

Ben Stone is a seasoned software engineer and Chief Technology Officer with a unique blend of expertise in cognitive psychology, software development, and data analysis. Currently, he wears multiple hats: as a Software Engineer at the Complex Human Data Hub (CHDH), Brain and Mental Health Hub (BAMH) and the Contemplative Studies Centre (CSC), and CTO at Unforgettable Research Services.

Merrick Giles is a phd candidate in cognitive science at the University of Melbourne Complex Human Data Hub. He is focused on developing formal theories of cognition concerning learning, strategy, and communication.

The Seminar

In this event in a series, speakers from within the Hub, the University, and the broader research community tell us about their research. Our Research Seminar Series involves speakers covering a broad range of themes surrounding our Hub’s interests, so we’ll hopefully all learn something interesting. Whether you want to learn to inform your own research or to simply satisfy a personal curiosity, we hope to see you there.
