Seraphine F. Maerz is a Senior Lecturer in Political Science (Research Methods) who joined the School of Social and Political Science at the University of Melbourne in January 2024. Before, she led a project on digital authoritarianism at the Goethe University in Frankfurt (funded by the German Research Foundation) and was Assistant Professor at the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) Institute in Gothenburg, Sweden. She is a Research Associate of the V-Dem Institute.
Seraphine's research interests focus on the comparative study of democracy and authoritarianism, political communication, Internet politics and the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on democracy. In her ongoing research projects, she studies the language of political leaders and inquires about regime transformation processes, in particular episodes of autocratization.
Seraphine is passionate about quantitative methods, computational text analysis, and the use of open-source Large Language Models (LLMs) for research. She is the co-founder of QuantLab, a new network group at the University of Melbourne to bring together social scientists interested in quantitative methods. Seraphine believes in knowledge sharing and offers free online tutorials (Homepage of QuantLab) and accessible online workshops on using AI tools for research.
