Research Panel: Large Language Models and Human Cognition

Image for Research Panel: Large Language Models and Human Cognition

Recent advances in computational models of human language, such as large language models (LLMs), have taken the world by storm, resulting in many uncertainties about where this technology is heading and what these models can and cannot do – with tremendous implications for society, research, and education. In this panel, three experts discuss one particular facet of these issues: what implications the advances in LLMs have for cognitive science. The panel opened with a 10-minute presentation by Prof Dennis giving an introductory overview about how LLMs work.

The Speakers

Professor Simon Dennis is the Head of the Memory and Language Lab in the School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Melbourne. Simon’s research utilises large scale real world data, experimental paradigms and computational modelling techniques to investigate the cognitive architecture underlying memory and language

Dr Simon D Deyne is a cognitive scientist at the University of Melbourne in the Computational Cognitive Science Lab and the Complex Human Data Hub. His research explores how the mind acquires and represents word meaning through our experiences with the world and the use of language.

Dr Ekaterina Vylomova is a lecturer in the School of Computing and Information Systems at the University of Melbourne. Her research focuses on computational approaches to linguistic typology and morphology, diachronic language models, NLP technology for under-resourced languages and language revitalization, and neural machine translation.

The Seminar

In this event in a series, speakers from within the Hub, the University, and the broader research community tell us about their research. Our Research Seminar Series involves speakers covering a broad range of themes surrounding our Hub’s interests, so we’ll hopefully all learn something interesting. Whether you want to learn to inform your own research or to simply satisfy a personal curiosity, we hope to see you there.
