The Speaker
Fiona is broadly interested in how experts, including scientists, make decisions and change their minds. She is Discipline Chair of History and Philosophy of Science, and co-lead of the MetaMelb Research Initiative (https://arts.unimelb.edu.au/school-of-historical-and-philosophical-studies/our-research/metamelb).
Her past research has examined processes of methodological change - in particular, changes in statistical practices - in different disciplines, including psychology, medicine and ecology. She has also been involved in developing methods for eliciting reliable expert judgements to improve decision making in environmental management and conservation.
Fiona originally trained as a psychologist, and then undertook a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science. After a postdoc back in Psychology, she worked in Environmental Decision centres for roughly a decade before returning to History and Philosophy of Science.
Fiona was the founding president of the Association for Interdisciplinary Metaresearch and Open Science (AIMOS) and a member of the steering committee of the Australian Reproducibility Network (AusRn). She is also a member of the Australian Academy of Science's National Committee for History and Philosophy of Science.
She has an abiding interest in statistical practices, particularly statistical controversies, for example, the ongoing debate over Null Hypothesis Significance Testing.

The Seminar
In this event in a series, speakers from within the Hub, the University, and the broader research community tell us about their research. Our Research Seminar Series involves speakers covering a broad range of themes surrounding our Hub’s interests, so we’ll hopefully all learn something interesting. Whether you want to learn to inform your own research or to simply satisfy a personal curiosity, we hope to see you there.
