Children Aged 7-13 Needed for Study on the Development of Metacognitive Control
Children often confuse operations, e.g. answering 8 to the question ‘3 x 5 = ?’. This study investigates metacognition or thinking about thinking in typically developing children. Participants will complete short tasks on a computer that involve thinking about numbers, colours, shapes or pictures, having two rules that people often confuse for the other.
The aim is to understand how slowing down after errors (post-error slowing) and changing strategies may be helpful for academic learning. Post-error slowing is thought to reflect attention reorienting and strategic performance adjustment as it allows children to stop and think. This can provide insight into how children's metacognition - ability to think about their thoughts and actions develops.
