Introducing Professor Marta Garrido: Our CNH December Feature Story
Can you describe your research interests?
"I’ve got an endless curiosity about how cognition emerges from brain activity, and how in turn brain activity emerges from brain structural circuits."
What inspired you to pursue this research topic?
"An amazing Professor of Biophysics, Prof Eduardo Ducla-Soares, who was super enthusiastic about the brain. His lectures on understanding the physics of the brain, and how to use physical principles to image the brain were fascinating!"
What do you like most about your work?
"The thrill of discovery! That moment I first look at new data it’s like lifting a veil – nothing beats that. I also love mentoring students and ECRs in their research journey - seeing them grow as scientists and witnessing their success brings me great joy. I do love teaching neuroscience too – seeing the students’ eyes shine as they learn about the wonders of the brain reminds me of how my passion for the brain started."
What has been the most rewarding aspect of being Director of the Cognitive Neuroscience Hub?
"Being able to interact with very bright minds who share a love of learning about the brain and cognition. The Cog Neuro hub has 13 labs and over 90 students, and over the past 3 years we have hosted 25 visiting academics – that’s a lot of very bright minds I’ve been lucky to interact with and learn from."
Can you share a memorable moment or imitative that really captured the spirit of collaboration within the Hub?
"The annual symposium is always a highlight as it showcases the fine quality of the work that our staff and students do. It’s also a time for connection with other cog neuro researchers in Melbourne from neighbouring institutions and the broader community."
What advice would you give to any early-career researchers in our community?
"Work on a problem that fascinates you!"
