Dr Auguste Harrington

Dr Auguste Harrington is a leading academic, spearheading research into the complex psychology of gender and gender-based attitudes. His journey into this field was ignited by a profound recognition of how gender identity acutely shapes individuals' lives.

"An individual’s gender identity has a huge impact on the ways they think, feel, behave and are perceived by others," says Dr Harrington. "My research aims to shed light on the ways that gender norms influence important outcomes within people’s day-to-day lives, with the ultimate goal of positively impacting people’s lives by challenging rigid and restrictive gender norms."

His decision to conduct research at the Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences was carefully made, drawn by the prestigious research environment and the opportunity to collaborate with esteemed colleagues like Dr Khandis Blake. Within the University, Dr Harrington serves as a dedicated member of the Ethics and Wellbeing Hub, where he actively explores the ethical dimensions of psychological research.

Dr Harrington's research portfolio spans a wide array of interconnected topics, focused on understanding the origins and effects of traditional gender attitudes and beliefs Using various methodologies, he explores how these attitudes manifest in intimate relationships and dating contexts, influencing behaviours and outcomes ranging from intimate aggression to body image dissatisfaction.

"I’m particularly interested in understanding how people's thoughts, feelings, and behaviour within intimate romantic relationships and dating contexts are shaped by their attitudes about gender norms," explains Dr Harrington. "I very much enjoy having the opportunity to allow my interests and passions to shape the topics of my research. This creative freedom means that I’m always engaged in projects that I find exciting."

One of Dr Harrington's innovative projects involves analysing a vast database of geolocated tweets to observe shifts in societal attitudes towards gender and gender roles. This novel approach offers valuable insights into how socioeconomic factors, such as income inequality, influence perceptions of gender.

As Dr Harrington continues to investigate the intricate dynamics of gender psychology, his research not only contributes to academic understanding but also holds the potential to drive positive societal change by challenging and reshaping entrenched gender norms.
