Brotherton Fellowship

Call for applications for the 2024 Brotherton Fellows

We are inviting members of the School to submit nominations for the 2024 Brotherton Fellows.

The Patricia Lesley Brotherton Bequest

Dr Patricia Lesley Brotherton, a lecturer in the Department of Psychology until her death in 1979, made a bequest to the Department of Psychology, University of Melbourne, to be used for the following purposes:

  1. To provide special lectures (the Brotherton Lectures) in the Department given by persons from within Australia or overseas;
  2. To appoint from time to time a fellow (the Brotherton Fellow) from within Australia or overseas, to undertake in the Department research relating to psychology; and
  3. To enhance the work of the Department in any other approved way.

The Brotherton Fellow

During their period at the University, Fellows will be expected to present a public lecture, as well as several specialist lectures or a short series of seminars on a topic of general interest to the School. They should also be available for consultation with staff and students and, if possible, to be engaged in research.

Fellows will be appointed under the relevant University statute and will be asked to prepare a brief report at the conclusion of their visit.

The Brotherton Lecture

The lecture will be promoted in the press and the University, and will be associated with a reception after the presentation.

Timing of the visit

It is expected that the duration of the Fellows' visits would be between three and six weeks.
The timing of the visit will be dependent on the schedules of each Fellow and their host academic, however, nominations for this round of applications must include arrivals no later than 1 December 2024.
Note, there will be an additional callout in mid 2024 for 2025 applicants.

Level of funding

The Brotherton endowment will meet reasonable expenses incurred by the Fellows for the period of the Fellowship. The maximum funding available per Fellow is $12,000 and is limited to:

  • Economy or premium economy return airfares to Melbourne
  • Accommodation and transfers
  • Daily meals and local travel expenses.

Please note, the Brotherton Lecture and Brotherton Reception will be costed separately with assistance from the MSPS Engagement Team.
