Risk Factors

Research Themes

Who is at risk for developing an ED?
Are there different risk factors for males and females with EDs?
Does culture play a role in the development of EDs?

Eating disorders (EDs) are complex gene-environment disorders with poorly understood aetiology. As part of an ongoing multi-centre European project our team has been able to assess a range of risk factors for EDs (e.g., genetics, low social interactions in childhood, childhood eating patterns, weight-related teasing, attachment difficulties, and low social rank). Various of our studies have also looked at cultural differences across various European, Asian and Middle Eastern countries. Finally, we have also tried to assess gender differences in a range of our clinical risk factor (e.g. personality and general psychopathology) studies.
