The Speaker
Norbert Vanek directs the Sensory Psycholinguistics lab at the School of Cultures, Languages and Linguistics. His research centres on linguistic modulations of how adults process sensory input. His appointment as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Auckland started in July 2020. Before joining the University of Auckland, he worked as a lecturer and a Leverhulme Research Fellow at the Centre for Research in Language Learning and Use at the University of York. Norbert's research activities there focused on conceptual reorganisation in highly advanced second language learners, and the main modules he led were Bilingualism and Research Methods.
He completed a PhD (2013) at the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, and an MPhil (2008) at the Research Centre for English and Applied Linguistics, both at the University of Cambridge. His doctoral research focused on temporal reference in the discourse of mono/bilingual populations and learner varieties. Previously, he worked with Cambridge ESOL (2008-2010) to examine criterial features for second language proficiency levels within the English Profile Project. He also holds an MA in TESOL and in European studies (2003) from the University of Constantine the Philosopher in Slovakia, and is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE (formerly the Higher Education Academy). Norbert serves as a General Editor for the journal Language and Cognition | Cambridge Core.

The Seminar
In this event in a series, speakers from within the Hub, the University, and the broader research community tell us about their research. Our Research Seminar Series involves speakers covering a broad range of themes surrounding our Hub’s interests, so we’ll hopefully all learn something interesting. Whether you want to learn to inform your own research or to simply satisfy a personal curiosity, we hope to see you there.
