New publication: Case study on self-motion induced environmental kinetopsia and pop-out illusion

Single patient case study on self-motion induced environmental kinetopsia and pop-out illusion

Prabhakar and Marta from the Cognitive Neuroscience and Computational Psychiatry Lab, and team of researchers report about a patient who experiences visual disturbance of inward movement of roadside buildings towards the centre of his visual field, that occurred only when he moved forward on his motorbike. They refer to this phenomenon as “self-motion induced environmental kinetopsia”. This patient also experiences pop out illusion where objects displayed on the screen, appeared to pop out of the background.

In their recent publication, they describe the clinical phenomena and the behavioural tasks specifically designed to document and measure this altered visual experience. Using the methods of lesion mapping and lesion network mapping, they report damage to functional connectivity in brain regions involved in visual processing.
