Mindfulness and social justice project awarded Peace Grant

CSC researchers receive grant to examine the relationship between mindfulness meditation and social justice literacy.

A team of researchers led by Ana Dragojlovic and Julieta Galante has received a Peace grant from Mind & Life for an innovative project examining the relationship between mindfulness meditation and social justice literacy.

The project seeks to investigate how mindfulness meditation teachers incorporate social justice literacy training into their classes and understand its intersection with personal wellbeing in the context of global social justice issues.

The aim is to understand how mindfulness meditation teachers are addressing social injustice while promoting personal wellbeing.

The focus will be on teachers committed to promoting social justice, exploring their attitudes, existing practices, and challenges related to the integration of social justice literacy, including gender, racial, and environmental literacy.

The team will examine the experiences of mindfulness meditation teachers, including their training, methods, and barriers to learning and implementation. This will be complemented by a textual analysis of social justice manuals.

One notable aspect of the project is its commitment to global representation, striving to include diverse perspectives in mapping mindfulness practices and social justice efforts worldwide.

"We appreciate Mind & Life's support for recognising the importance of exploring the relationship between mindfulness and social justice," says Dragojlovic. "This project will provide insights into the role of modern mindfulness applications in supporting social justice and contribute to the evolution of mindfulness training."

The research team's work aims to make a practical contribution to understanding the role of mindfulness in addressing social injustices globally, reflecting a measured approach to the subject matter.
