Managing Emotions in Everyday Life

What is this study about?

In this project, we’re investigating emotions in everyday life, and the many different ways that people manage these emotions. We want to better understand what motivates your emotion regulation choices.

This project is part of two Honours student theses for 2020, and the results will be used to help researchers develop interventions to improve emotion management.

If you take part in this study, what will you need to do?

The study consists of 2 parts:

  1. On the first day, you’ll download the smartphone application SEMA3, and participate in a baseline survey which will take about 40 minutes
  2. For the next 7 days, you’ll receive a series of very short smartphone surveys asking questions about your emotions. Surveys will be sent 8 times a day, for 7 days, and should only take 2-3 minutes to complete.

What will I receive for my participation?

You will be paid in GiftPay vouchers, which are distributed online and can be used at a wide variety of stores (e.g. Coles, Myer, David Jones, Woolworths, see giftpay.com.au for more details). You can be paid up to $45 for your time.

For undertaking the baseline survey (Part 1), you will receive $15 in gift cards. Following this, you’ll receive up to $30 in gift cards depending on your participation in the smartphone surveys (Part 2). You will receive the full $30 for the smartphone surveys if you complete at least 80% of the surveys. You’ll receive $5 less for every 10% fewer surveys you complete (so for example, if you complete between 70 - 79% you'll receive $25 for the smartphone surveys).

Participation in the smartphone surveys will also allow you to opt-in to receive a personalised report at the end of the study, which will provide you with graphical information of your responses to each survey question throughout the week.

Who is eligible to participate?

There are 3 eligibility requirements for the study: (1) You must be currently residing in Australia; (2) You must own an iPhone (iOS 8 or above) or an Android (Android 6.0 or above), which is NOT an Oppo or Huawei phone; (3) You must be comfortable installing the SEMA3 application onto your smartphone.

Thank you for your interest in participating in the study but data collection is now closed.
